Where the audiences diverge
L.L.Bean and Patagonia are often mentioned together because both carry a reputation for durability, but they are aimed at different people. Patagonia sells to someone who identifies with climbing, surfing or environmental advocacy and is willing to pay a premium that funds repair programmes and supply-chain work. L.L.Bean sells to someone who wants a coat for the driveway and does not want to think about the brand while wearing it.
The North Face competes for visibility rather than longevity. Its customer often buys the jacket as part of an outfit, and the style cycle matters more than the ten-year horizon. That is a legitimate strategy, just a different one — it produces more trend response and less consistency of fit between seasons.
